In this expository essay, the issue of the portrayal of the opioid epidemic in the news media is addressed. This essay particularly discusses the issue of the cause of opioid addiction. Recently, as the number of deaths in America due to opioids have increased, there has been widespread debate as to whether or not the majority of opioid deaths should be attributed to prescribers or illegal drugs. The news has portrayed the opioid epidemic as a social, often anecdotal issue, rather than a practical issue. This essay focuses on what has been done in the past to address the epidemic and what can be done in the future to address the issue.
